What is a Fill Valve?
The fill valve is the part of the toilet that is responsible for filling the tank after each flush.

The first thing you should do before attempting any adjustments to your toilet is to familiarize yourself with its components. For this case, you’ll want to determine what kind of fill valve is used in your particular commode. There are many different types of fill valves, but there are two that are most prevalent in today’s toilets.
An older version that utilizes a ballcock (a black float ball on a metal or plastic rod) can still be found in many toilets. A more modern model that can also be found in many systems doesn’t use a ballcock at all. Instead, the more updated version senses the water level and prevents the inflow from the valve with a float that rides up the fill valve of the toilet.

Because all fill valves are adjustable, fixing this issue can be fairly simple. If the toilet won’t stop running, it is likely because the fill valve has been set too high. This can cause the water level to be higher than your toilet’s overflow tube. For a ballcock valve, you just have to manually adjust the float by moving it up or down its plastic or metal rod. More modern fill valves have a screw on top that can be easily adjusted with a screwdriver.
