3 Reasons Why You Should Get A Chimney Inspection

If you don’t use your fireplace often, you may not give much thought to having your chimney inspected or even having a chimney inspection. However, foregoing a chimney inspection before lighting the logs could put you and your home at risk. The Elite Group Home Inspections specializes in the inspection of chimneys and gives Orange County homeowners three reasons to schedule a chimney inspection.

1. Get rid of chimney-related fire hazards.

When your fireplace is not in use, it’s really easy for birds to set up their cozy little nests in your chimney. While that’s great for the birds, the nests that remain can result in fire hazards for you. Additionally, if you do use your fireplace often, your chimney can build up creosote, another element that can pose a fire hazard. Inman notes, “If the chimney hasn’t been swept recently (it probably hasn’t) [the chimney inspector] will recommend that it be cleaned before laying your first fire of the season.”

2.  Make sure your fireplace drafts effectively.

According to the Chimney Safety Institute of America, “just as a water hose can be kinked or plugged, the airflow in your chimney can have a restriction that slows down the smoke flowing up the chimney.” Without a proper draft, smoke can come back into your home, rather than escape through the chimney.

3. Keep the critters (& other unwelcome guests) out.

You not only want to make sure your fireplace vents out properly, but you also want to keep unwanted animals, snow or other elements out of your chimney. During a chimney inspection, you can find out whether the chimney cap is doing its job in keeping these things out.

If you’re buying a new home or you haven’t had a chimney inspection in the last year, The Elite Group Home Inspections team recommends that you schedule a chimney inspection as soon as possible. Orange County, California residents can contact The Elite Group Home Inspections at (909) 718-8682 to find out more about our chimney inspection services.
